Do You Really Need a Pumping Bra?
A good pumping bra can be a godsend: It can hold pump parts in place and free up your hands to do the many other things required of a new momcozy. But finding a bra that provides support, easy access to your breasts, the right fit, and is also comfortable, can be tricky. That's where we come in.We reviewed guidelines and spoke to breastfeeding counselors and nursing momcozy. We then recruited a team of parenting editors and writers who are nursing and pumping right now to test over a dozen top-rated options to find the best pumping bra. They wore the different bras day and night and pumped using a variety of hands-free and portable breast pumps for several months. We evaluated them for their fit, comfort, support, accessibility, breast pump compatibility, material, and overall aesthetics (because even when you're pumping, you still want to wear a cute bra!).
Since many momcozy nurses and pumps, we placed a high value on each bra's ability to let you seamlessly do both throughout your day without requiring a second undergarment. We paid close attention to each bra's durability, whether it was easy to clean, how well it stood up to leaking nipples, how the fabric felt, and how easy or finicky the closures were to use. A certified lactation consultant from our Expert Board also reviewed this article for medical accuracy around nursing, pumping, and what to look for in a pumping bra.
A pumping bra is not essential but will make your life easier. Unlike nursing bras, a pumping bra is specifically designed to hold the breast pump flanges tightly in place, so you won't have to sit still and hold them yourself. Pumping bras are especially helpful if you need to multitask or pump at the office because you can continue working on your computer or phone as your breast pump does its thing. During testing, we were even able to unload the dishwasher, fold laundry, blow dry our hair, and play with toddlers while pumping.
